GP Assistant Course

GP Assistants can gain a new qualification in 2025, with a FREE course worth £2,400! ‘Fundamental Skills for General Practice Assistants’ starts in February 2025 and is fully funded by NHS England.

The programme is delivered by Anglia Ruskin University (ARU), home to Essex’s first School of Medicine.

The course is primarily studied online, with two in-person days at ARU’s Chelmsford campus.

Build Your Skills:

The 36-week, part-time course doesn’t assume any prior knowledge or experience, just an enthusiasm to learn.

The programme enables GP Assistants to contribute to a more effective working environment, for both staff and patients, via five key areas:

  • Care
  • Administration
  • Clinical
  • Communication
  • Managing Health Records

Learning Made Simple:

The programme includes approximately three hours of learning per week, including live, online discussion sessions and online activities for GP Assistants to complete in their own time.

GP Assistants will meet their peers and tutors at an induction day and a practical, training day.

In the workplace, they will be supported by a GP assigned to act as their ‘mentor’ and sign off tasks. Other colleagues, such as nurses or administrators, may also provide guidance.

Once GP Assistants successfully complete the programme, practices receive a financial contribution of £675, in acknowledgement of the mentoring GPs provide during the learning process.
