Award win for inspiring the next generation of nurses working in GP practices

A local nurse (Sam Minett) has scooped the Practice Educator of the Year Award at the Nursing Times Workforce Awards 2024 for her role in training and inspiring student nurses to work in GP practices.

Sam Minett works at the NHS Suffolk and North East Essex Training Hub, leads on the Inspire Project. This project gives nursing students the opportunity to work in a GP practice and gain experience of general practice, with the aim of boosting the future number of nurses who work alongside other health care professionals delivering patient care from GP practices.

Sam’s award recognises how she has developed this project and that in just two years she has increased the number of GP practices who are equipped and able to offer student nurse training, from eight to 48 across Suffolk and north east Essex.

The number of supervisors and assessors within the GP practices, those who help train the student nurses, has also increased under Sam’s leadership, from 51 to 243, and along with this growth in capacity there has been a recognised improvement in the quality of training and enthusiasm.
